Starting a sailing adventure in Croatia’s beautiful waters is really exciting. You’ve picked your boat, and you might even have the necessary license. But maybe you are still thinking about whether to get a skipper, a hostess, or both. If this is your first time sailing in Croatia, we suggest having a local with you, so let this crewed charter guide help you choose which crew professional to hire. If you feel really confident and sail extremely well, having a hostess or a cook could be very helpful. They can show you the best places to go, give you tips to avoid crowds, and even help on the boat. On the other hand, a skipper is great if you want to fully enjoy your vacation without worrying about the technical parts of sailing.

We have a lot of experience in boating, especially in offering charter services. We know the best caterers, restaurants, places to visit, and of course, skippers, cooks, hostesses, and other boating experts. These experts take your holiday to the next level, by keeping you safe and making sure you have a great time throughout the cruise.

Read on, because this crewed charter guide brings detailed tasks of each crew memeber.

Role of The Skipper

Our skippers are professional sailors, qualified by all necessary sailing certificates and licenses. Moreover, they are highly experienced and have logged many miles under their belts. Even if you’re a seasoned boater, having a skipper on board has many advantages and benefits. The skipper will handle all boat-related matters in port and at sea. Here is a list of some of their duties:

  • check-in and check-out procedures – boat handover with marina staff
  • briefing your crew to prepare for the cruise
  • monitoring weather forecasts and sea conditions
  • preparing daily sailing routes and suggesting activities
  • keeping the boat in excellent working order and the deck clean
  • refueling, resupplying water, and connecting electricity
  • handling harbor entrance and departure and submitting necessary documents to port authorities
  • providing local guidance on sights, attractions, activities, shops, restaurants, car and motor rentals
  • navigating the yacht while you relax or engage in other activities
  • sharing knowledge about sailing and navigation
  • supervising the yacht when at anchor

However, a skipper’s responsibilities do not extend to cooking, dishwashing, cleaning the interior, shopping for food, or babysitting.

Role of the Hostess

A hostess is someone who does her best to make your vacation more memorable and pleasant. She is on board to maintain the boat’s cleanliness, prepare food and clear after meals and helps you choose the most suitable restaurant for your dinner, give advice on places of interest.

Her tasks vary on the number of crew members and usually include:

  • preparing the interior of the boat and checking the galley inventory, cleaning utensils and products, as well as bedding
  • greeting you upon your arrival and helping you to settle in
  • advising you on provisioning for the charter and payment methods before departure (it is common practice that at least one crew member accompanies the hostess during the first shopping to make joint decisions while choosing the best food for the trip and also help in carrying – we can arrange basic groceries delivered to the boat in advance to reduce shopping and carry to the minimum)
  • stowing provisions ready for sea
  • daily shopping for fresh bread and other necessities
  • preparing and serving breakfast and lunch at agreed times, other meals can be arranged at additional cost
  • washing up and putting away the dishes after meals and tidying up the saloon
  • checking and cleaning your showers and heads once a day
  • if agreed, the hostess will make your bed in the morning
  • Baby-sitting service is also a possibility but as this adds to her tasks, additional hostess-fee depends on the number of children and the time spent babysitting

Yet, a hostess isn’t a professional chef, and you shouldn’t request particular meal types. This includes dishes that are specialties of foreign countries or those requiring extensive preparation. She will make every effort to offer a varied Mediterranean menu, abundant in local cuisine, featuring fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood…

Also, all our hostesses are marine trained, so they help during dock maneuvers and some sailing activities. When required, the hostess has to help the skipper during maneuvers (coming in and out of marinas, dropping anchor, refueling, etc.) and then finish her other duties. Remember, safety on any boat always comes first!

A Hostess or a Cook?

What are the main differences between a hostess and a cook? Our crewed charter guide also has a table to make your decision easier;

Tasks:

TasksCook / ChefHostess
Meal preparationas many as requiredbreakfast + one light meal
Meal typesall types (international, local) even more complicated meals but bearing in mind the galley equipment and conditions on boardusually local and less complicated meals but very tasteful and in accordance with your wishes
Cleaninggalley and salon onlythe boat’s interior as well as cabins, heads and showers
Helping with maneuversalways a priorityalways a priority
Baby-sittingavailable upon request and with a surcharge

Bear in mind that

  • any crew member needs a separate cabin or berth on board (most of our catamarans have one or two crew cabins in the bow, so this is what they’ll use, as for sailboats and motorboats that don’t have a separate crew cabin you’ll need to arrange that with the crew on the spot)
  • in case the crew cabin does not include a separate toilet, usage of one guest toilet during the day should be granted to the crew
  • you need to provide food for the crew members
  • although all our boats are very comfortable, the space on board is limited and cooperation and tolerance are required from all crew members
  • all crew members need their daily rest after they have finished their tasks and duties

What About Tipping?

Tipping is not obligatory, but is a good way to show appreciation for the crew’s services. Usually, it’s 10-20% of the booking price of the charter. Read our full guide on tipping.

If you’re still looking for a boat, remember that practically all our boats can be hired with a skipper and/or hostess. We also have some boats that are only available for charter with a skipper:

with skipper and hostess:

with skipper, hostess and a cook:

For all other boats, we would be delighted to assist you in finding the best crew to create the perfect holiday. Feel free to reach out to our dedicated charter team for assistance.

Not that we like dwelling in the past, but it’s important to recognize significant and successful beginnings. More than 40 years ago, the Australian luxury yacht brand, Riviera, started developing excellent boats. So let’s take a brief journey back to 1980, when it all started.

Riviera’s Pioneering Beginnings (1980)

What’s clear is that innovation was at the heart of Riviera right from the start. There was never any doubt about Riviera’s promising future, and by the end of 1981, the company had relocated to the Gold Coast, Queensland. A dedicated team of five employees began crafting 8 new vessels that year. Their strong belief in a prosperous future quickly became a reality, and the company continued forward at a rapid pace.

Entering Global Markets (1990s)

Riviera produced numerous cutting-edge vessels, and acquired international popularity as they started exporting to Europe and the USA. The development of new models and Riviera’s success story culminated by their reception of the Modern Boating’s Boat of the Year award for three consecutive years, starting in the early 1990s. By 1998, the number of employees in the company increased to 280 employees. Hence, Riviera opened a new facility in Coomera. There were no longer any limits to advancement; innovation, prestige, and luxury. Riviera unquestionably stood out in the maritime industry.

Rodney Longhurst’s Vision of Riviera (2012)

In 2012, Rodney Longhurst took over Riviera with a clear goal: to make it a globally recognized brand that exceeds others in every aspect of the boating lifestyle. He combined his business skills with a passion for boats, creativity, quality, and innovation. Today, Riviera has achieved numerous successes, has maintained a steady growth and worldwide acclaim. By the looks of it, this is only the beginning.

Unveiling a Bright Future

Reflecting on Riviera’s journey, it’s evident that from its pioneering beginnings in 1980, marked by innovation and firm belief, to its global market presence and Rodney Longhurst’s transformative vision in 2012, the company has solidified its place in the maritime industry. Riviera’s story is a testament to persistence, innovation, and the pursuit of excellence. And we expect many stunning yachts in the decades to come.

You must have heard about the deliciousness of Croatia’s rich cuisine. Most of it is actually Dalmatian cuisine. In fact, Croatian cuisine is much wider and includes influences from Austria, Central Europe, Turkey, and Italy (but other cuisines as well).  Because three of our four bases are located in the Dalmatian region of Croatia, let’s first explore the most delicious tastes Dalmatian cuisine has to offer. From seafood to wine, Dalmatia will satisfy your palates for sure!

Appetizers

Dalmatian prosciutto and cheese from Pag island

Are you going for some wine with friends in Dalmatia? Or do you simply want to eat something as an appetizer? Then have some Dalmatian pršut and Paški sir, or in English, prosciutto and Pag island cheese. Both are served with homemade bread and possibly some olives. Pršut is a dry ham, you can find varieties of differently smoked versions. Paški sir is made from sheep’s milk on the island of Pag. It is very delicious and goes great with some red wine!

Soparnik

If you are hungry for a healthy and traditional snack, Soparnik is the perfect one. It is essentially two layers of thin dough and a filling of Swiss chard, onions, parsley and garlic. It’s well-oiled with the finest local olive oil, so be careful when eating it in order to avoid greasy stains on your clothes.

Pogaca

Another delicious appetizer from Dalmatian cuisine is pogaca.  Pogaca is commonly made on islands, and they have different names and some variations in the recipe – Viska, Forska and Komiska pogaca. Pogaca is a type of baked bread pie, a bit similar to focaccia filled with anchovies or salty fish, onions and depending on which part of the island, tomatoes.

Viska pogaca is from the town of Vis on the island Vis. It’s served in triangles and has as ingredients chopped anchovies or sardines, sautéed onions, seasoning, and capers to taste. Komiska pogaca, is from the town of Komiza on the island of Vis and it’s almost the same with the small difference of adding tomatoes to the recipe. They wanted to refresh the traditional recipe with more Mediterranean seasonings. Lastly, forska pogaca has all the other ingredients mentioned, as well as tomato sauce, but it comes with sheep’s or goat’s cheese! This is the ingredient that differentiates it from the others. Once you’ve tried them all, let us know which one you like the best.

Dalmatian Cuisine – Main dishes

Pasticada

One of the most traditional dishes of the Dalmatian cuisine is pasticada. It is only made on special occasions (such as weddings, important family gatherings, and holidays). There are as many recipes as there are cooks who prepare it. Almost every local restaurant, has its own version, as well. Pasticada is the perfect dish for meat lovers as the main ingredient is juneći frikando – something like silverside baby beef. (sidenote: In Croatia, cow meat is classified into 3 age groups – veal (6-12 months), baby beef (12-14 months) and beef (15+ months)).

It takes at least 2 days to prepare pasticada. Usually, it’s served with gnocchi.  Apart from the meat, plenty of vegetables and fruit, lots of love, experience, and patience are essential ingredients for the making of a delicious pasticada.

Grilled fish

Fish is one of the most common and delicious dishes in Dalmatia. The most popular kinds of fish found in many restaurants are sardines, tuna steaks, or mackerel. The best and healthiest way to prepare them is on the grill. The combination we recommend is with Swiss chard and potatoes. A healthy and fulfilling dish right from the Adriatic Sea! Although blue fish is much healthier (it contains much more omega-3s among other things), it tends to be heavier on the stomach, so we recommend it for lunch rather than dinner. At dinner, opt for some white fish such as gilt-head bream, sea bass, common dentex (also called the emperor of the fishes), John Dory, or similar.

Black risotto

You may have seen black food served in a dish and felt bad about it or curious about what it is. Once you taste it, all of your questions will be answered! So, the main ingredient in this risotto is cuttlefish (and/or calamari) and its black ink sack. Once you put some grated cheese on top, it becomes a feast. It’s actually classified as a starter, but you can enjoy it as a light main course as well!

Peka

It takes many hours to finish, but it is very delicious. Octopus with potatoes and other vegetables and herbs such as rosemary and sage and some olive oil is one of the most popular coastal peka dishes. Peka is actually a very heavy metal bell, under which flavors of all ingredients are best preserved! We recommend other peka dishes such as lamb or veal with potatoes on the side. Lamb from the islands of Brac and Pag are particularly famous and valued.

Peka is probably the only truly Croatian dish. The bell is an original invention of the Illyrian tribes – the Delmates that lived in Dalmatia even before the Romans and the Greeks discovered the region.

Gregada

Let’s introduce you now to gregada. Gregada is a famous dish from the island of Hvar, but almost every Adriatic island has its own version of it. Some sources indicate that this dish is actually one of the oldest ways to prepare fish in Dalmatia. The ancient Greeks brought it with them around 380 BC.  It is actually a fish stew with white fish (mostly conger or grouper). In the modern version of greagada the main side ingredient is potato. Other important components that make a gregada delicious are: garlic, celery and parsley, and even anchovies and capers.

Makaruni

Korcula island has the reputation to have the best homemade makaruni in Croatia. Don’t mistake them for the French dessert macarons, because this is handmade pasta. It all started 400 years ago in Zrnovo village and the art of making macaroni passed on through generations and all over the island. One try of this delicious pasta mixed with a sauce of your choosing (beef, tomatoes, pesto, seafood etc.) in any konoba (tavern), will delight you!

Desserts

Is it time for dessert yet? Of course, when you eat a delicious meal, you need some food for the soul to complete your culinary experience. So we have some Dalmatian cuisine desserts from different parts of the region you have to try.

Fritule

Fritule are small bites similar to doughnuts made deep-fried. Traditionally, they are decorated with some sugar, but chocolate or cinnamon also work great. They were a traditional carnival sweet, but now they’re accessible throughout the coast and all year round. Now they come served in a big cup along with the topping you choose and a skewer that helps you get every last one of them!

Rafioli

Rafioli originates from a small town in Dalmatia region, Trogir. You may think that this is a dish like ravioli with cheese, but think again. This sweet pastry is stuffed with almonds, rum, lemon, maraschino, and sugar on top.

Rožata

It originates from the beautiful town of Dubrovnik and is something close to the French crème brûlée, made of fresh eggs, sweet liqueur rosulin, lemon zest and caramel. Rozata got its name after Rosulin, one of the main ingredients that gives it the sweet taste – the rose. Definitely worth a try.

Drinks

When you go to a restaurant, you always want the drink to match your food. In Dalmatia, wine is very popular and there are many wine varieties. Croatian inherited viticulture from the ancient Greeks who brought it to Dalmatia some 2400 years ago, so wine practically flows through their veins. Choosing the right drink/wine and consuming it in moderation completes a well-balanced meal. The selection of white and red wines is vast, so we’ll be writing a separate blog on that alone. Red varieties are much more common in Dalmatia and one of the most widespread sorts is Plavac Mali. Here are our suggestions for other drinks:

Rakija

Rakija is a very strong drink popular among Croatians. It is similar to Brandy, grappa, spirit, or schnapps. It’s an apéritif that prepares the stomach for the meal to come. Locals say that this drink connects people, so you should give it a try!

Maraschino

Maraschino is another very strong alcoholic drink. It originates from the city of Zadar and is a type of sweet and aromatic liqueur made of marasca sour cherries, grown in the region. This drink is from the 16th century and has been consumed by famous historical figures and authors. For instance, Ernest Hemingway, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock.

Beer

Of course, beer is something very common in Croatia. Try some local draft beers like Osjecko, Karlovacko, Ozujsko and Pan to feel like a local or even from some small craft breweries since it has become a very popular hobby/business for many Croatians.

We gave you the best options from starters to drinks to have the best culinary experience. Have you tried any of these delicious products? If not, which one would you try first?

How to Save 300 € on Your Charter? – Avoid Clogging the Toilet

The beautiful clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, the stunning view of Croatian Islands, funny moments with friends on board, amazing parties in Hvar… Croatia is the perfect destination for your next sailing vacations, but it is up to you to keep it among the best of memories – by not clogging (a) toilet(s) and saving 300 €.

To be honest, a clogged toilet is already a nightmare in normal situations, but having a clogged boat toilet in the middle of the sea is definitely no picnic. To avoid this headache and enjoy your sailing vacation in Croatia, we prepared a list of good practices that can help you save 300 € for each clogged toilet.

How does a toilet clog?

Knowing your enemy is the best way to defeat it. Toilet-wise, our main villain is toilet paper. Differently from the solid ground, the plumbing system in boats is not prepared to receive too much waste, including toilet paper, wet tissues, wipes, and especially hygienic products. And the misplacing of those wastes is the main reason why a toilet gets clogged on a boat.

After a toilet is clogged, there is little to be done in the seas. The recommendation is to stop using the toilet immediately and (if possible) return to Port. Do not attempt to unblock it yourself because the plumbing system is tricky. Our marina staff needs to disassemble the entire system, clean it thoroughly and then reassemble it.

We are aware, this has a great impact on your plans for a stress-free vacation. Returning and shortening your stay in the open sea is probably not in your itinerary, plus the unclogging process takes time and costs.

So, it’s best to be prepared and informed and learn how to avoid this situation, altogether.

How to avoid a blocked boat toilet?

Going to the bathroom at sea requires extra attention when it comes to where to dispose of the waste. Every bathroom on board a boat has a garbage bin with supplied garbage bags. So, throw all the waste inside. This includes toilet paper, wet tissues, face and baby wipes, hygienic products, food, etc. Dispose of the bag every day if necessary and replace it with a new one and, that’s it!

Our final tips for functioning boat toilets

  • Check if each boat toilet works properly at the check-in or before leaving the marina, and report any issues to the base manager.
  • Do not flush toilet paper on board, but dispose of it in the waste bag that we provide.
  • Tampons, facial tissues and other wastes must only be placed in the provided bin or bag.
  • Do not flush any food leftovers in the toilet.
  • Supervise and instruct your kids and teens when it comes to toilet usage. Don’t allow toddlers to use them on their own.
  • You are welcome to use the toilets in marinas and ports.

Following those golden rules for boat toilets will save you 300 € per toilet on your boat trip in Croatia. It will certainly help you have a stress-free and a wonderful experience on the Adriatic. Once you’ve successfully checked out (usually on Friday evening – learn more on the process of checking-out on our previous blog) you can take yourself and the crew for a celebratory dinner. And spend that 300 € by tasting yet another delicious meal and some fine Croatian wine.

While the Saxdor Yachts brand is relatively new, there’s a pretty long story behind it. Specifically, it evolved from many years of experience and the thorough practical knowledge of its founder – Sakari Mattila. This visionary boat designer from Finland has many success stories behind him. He has previously founded four internationally awarded boat brands: Axopar, XO-boats, Paragon and Aquador. Although he no longer has ties with these remarkable brands, Mattila has been the lead strategist and original designer for each of them.

Today, Sakari Mattila fully focuses on building the Saxdor Yachts brand. He has gathered a team of professionals, with a goal to make the new era of affordable boating possible.

So before we fully immerse ourselves in what Saxdor Yachts are now, let us introduce you to everything that’s led to this.

Previous Brands

  • Aquador Yachts
    • The first of Mattila’s brands, he designed in 1994
  • Paragon Yachts
    • Years later, in 2003, Mattila started his second brand (interestingly enough Nava is also a dealer for this brand, as well. These boats are part of the Nimbus group now. Feel free to check out the Paragon range).
  • XO boats
    • In 2008, this time Mattila joined forces with Erkki Talvela, and started the new brand
  • Axopar
    • In 2012, in cooperation with Josef Wizsniewski, the owner and founder of the Slepsk shipyard, Mattila starts the Axopar project
    • The name is a merge of the three previous brands: A = Aquador, XO = XO boats, PAR = PARagon
    • Mattila innovates the new concept and design of Axopar by the end of 2012
    • The first Axopar 28 was launched at the Helsinki International Boat Show in February 2014
    • Mattila was the sole founder of Axopar, he founded and registered Axopar Holdings Oy (Ltd) and its subsidiary Axopar Boats Oy (Ltd) in March 2014
    • Mattila’s company owned 100% of Axopar’s shares at the time of registration
    • The other three current shareholders bought their own shares from Mattila’s company in January and February 2015, three years after the start of the Axopar project
    • As an indication of Mattila’s new concept and design, in 2015 Axopar won several awards around the world and became the fastest-growing boat brand in Europe.

Beginning of a new era

In 2019, Mattila came up with the concept and design of what we now know as the new Saxdor model range. It all started with the 20 feet personal watercraft – Saxdor 200.

Similar to previous practices, the name of Saxdor Yachts comes from the first name of the founder and the other boat brands this visionary has founded:

  • S = Sakari
  • AX = AXopar
  • DOR = AquaDOR

In October 2019, Saxdor Yachts Oy (Ltd) was established. In the following year, a group of private investors and key persons of the Saxdor management team became significant minority shareholders. United Bankers Plc acts as an advisor to Saxdor Yachts.

The subsidiary shipyard of Saxdor Yachts began the production of Saxdor 200 in Elk, Poland.

The brand currently includes:

With the Saxdor Yachts’ plans of expansion, 2 new models are about to join the range soon:

While the future is often unforeseeable, for this innovative brand it looks pretty bright. Stay tuned to see what comes next in the story of Saxdor Yachts, because we’re witnessing history.
